FutureFeed wins 2023 BloombergNEF Pioneers Award

FutureFeed receiving BNEF Award in New York

BloombergNEF (BNEF) today announced the winners of its 2023 Pioneers Award, recognising 12 early-stage companies working to introduce technologies and products pushing the world to a net-zero global economy. FutureFeed has been recognised specifically for its work in “Building a net-zero food production system.”

“This red seaweed – Asparagopsis – was almost unheard of until recently. Thanks to its ability to reduce livestock methane emissions by more than 80 percent, it has caught the world’s attention for its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural systems,” FutureFeed CEO Alex Baker said.

FutureFeed was established by the CSIRO to commercialise the discovery that tiny amounts of this seaweed included in livestock feed could drastically reduce methane emissions. Only 5g per 1000g (1 kg) of feed is required.

“Greenhouse gas emissions… are still rising and there are many urgent obstacles to overcome in order for the world to reach net-zero emissions. The BNEF Pioneers award seeks to recognise companies making strides in sectors or areas where there are still technology or innovation challenges in meeting net-zero goals,” BloombergNEF said.

“FutureFeed is honoured to be recognised as a winner in the category of Building a net-zero food production system. We are at a critical point in history in terms of our ability to mitigate climate change,” Mr Baker said.

“FutureFeed is proud to be enabling feed additives for reducing livestock methane emissions, led by nearly ten years of robust research by our scientists and now the hard work of those who are growing and making available this precious seaweed. We are excited and poised to continue to develop the science to drive scale and adoption towards global impact.”

FutureFeed holds the global intellectual property for this livestock feed ingredient, and licenses Asparagopsis producers around the world to grow and process the seaweed for supply to livestock markets.

FutureFeed Board Chair Cassandra Kelly will be speaking at the BNEF Summit being held in New York on 24 April 2023.
